Itinerary
Your guide will meet you at the reception of your hotel to help you pick up the breakfast boxes you ordered the day before. Then you will start your Marsa Alam tours to Dendera and Abydos with a short break on the way for breakfast and using the toilets.
Upon arrival in Qena, you will start your day tour with the Hathor temple on the west bank of the Nile River.
Dendera Temple Complex: The Sanctuary of Hathor
Upon arrival in Qena, your first stop is the magnificent Dendera Temple Complex, dedicated to the goddess Hathor, goddess of love, beauty, and joy. This Ptolemaic temple is celebrated as one of the best-preserved and most architecturally complete temples in all of Egypt.
In fact, here you can explore many unique spots that you cannot see in any other Egyptian temples. For example, two Mammisi: one dates back to Nectanebo from the 30th dynasty, and one dates back to the Roman Era.
Moreover, the Coptic Church follows the basilican style like all Egyptian churches. Then, as long as Dendera was the Heart Chakra temple and a famous healing center at that time, the sanatorium is a main feature here.
A Nilometer is still there near the Sacred Lake, and the only carving for Cleopatra and her son is on the outer wall of the temple.
Moreover, the Isis Chapel is famous for its energetic atmosphere, and all Egyptian crowns are designed here for the first and last time.
Inside the temple, you can admire the first Hypostyle Hall with all the Zodiac signs, day and night hours, moon phases, and constellations. Deep inside the temple, you can enter some of the crypts of the temple, the Nut room, and the holy of holies.
On the roof, you can marvel at the famous Dendera Zodiac within its astronomical ceilings and the Osiris Myth in Osiris room.
Finally, you can capture stunning photographs before we proceed to the next stop.
Abydos Temple & The Osireion
Next is the sacred site of Abydos, home to the majestic Temple of Seti I. This temple is famous for its exceptional quality of bas-relief carvings, often considered among the finest in ancient Egypt.
Explore its seven chapels, each dedicated to different deities and Seti I himself, and witness the famous Abydos King List, a crucial historical record of Egyptian pharaohs. Also, you won’t miss Ramesses’ adding parts to the temple and the list of his sons and daughters.
Moreover, you can compare his high-relief scenes and his father’s bas-relief scenes. Finally, look at what’s called the Abydos Helicopter and Submarine before you complete your tour to the next stop.
Osireion
Now it’s time to visit the mysterious Osireion from outside, an enigmatic ancient structure associated with Osiris, the god of the afterlife. This unique building is about 15 m lower than the temple, and it has the famous flower of life carved on the granite, one of the unsolved problems till now.
Temple of Ramesses II
A short walk through the archaeological landscape will then bring you to the impressive ruins of the Temple of Ramesses II, where you can see some of the New Kingdom beautiful colors and carvings.
Lunch
Prepare for a homemade cooked lunch at a local house before your comfortable return journey.
