Valley of the Kings
In fact, one of the best things to do in Egypt is to visit the King’s Valley. Actually, this iconic UNESCO World Heritage site served as the royal burial ground for pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (18th to 20th dynasties). Carved deep into the desert rock, these elaborate tombs were designed to protect the pharaohs’ eternal rest and guide their souls to the afterlife.
While there are over 60 known tombs, only 7 tombs are open to the public on a rotating basis to aid in their preservation. In fact, the Highlights often include the relatively small yet famously intact Tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62), discovered by Howard Carter, where you can still see the boy king’s mummy. Other frequently open tombs like those of Ramesses III (KV11) and Ramesses IV (KV2) showcase breathtakingly vibrant hieroglyphics and detailed wall paintings depicting funerary texts and mythological scenes. For an additional fee, you might access the magnificent Tomb of Seti I (KV17), renowned for its exceptional artistry and preservation. Each tomb offers a unique glimpse into the beliefs and artistic mastery of ancient Egypt.
After visiting your 3 tombs and shoot some photos for the religious book decorating the walls such as Book of Dead, Opening of the Mouth, Book of Akr and the holy cow. Then, you will proceed to your next stop
Hatshepsut temple
The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, also known as Djeser-Djeseru (“Holy of Holies”), is a breathtaking masterpiece of ancient Egyptian architecture, uniquely carved into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari on the West Bank of Luxor. This terraced temple, built for the formidable female pharaoh Hatshepsut (c. 1479-1458 BCE), stands as a testament to her prosperous reign and ambition.
In fact, among its many highlights, the Hathor Chapel is particularly notable. Dedicated to the goddess of love, music, and motherhood, it features distinctive Hathor-headed columns and vibrant reliefs depicting the goddess as a cow, symbolizing fertility and prosperity. Adjacent to it is the Anubis Chapel, honoring the jackal-headed god of embalming and the underworld, with scenes showcasing his role in funerary rites.
One of the temple’s most celebrated features are the reliefs commemorating the Punt Expedition. These detailed carvings vividly depict Hatshepsut’s successful trade mission to the exotic Land of Punt. While not explicitly depicted as large-scale agriculture in ancient Egypt scenes, the prosperity brought by such expeditions indirectly supported the nation’s agricultural foundations. Besides, the beautiful scenes of the Divine Birth reliefs, a series of carvings that graphically narrate Hatshepsut’s mythological conception by the god Amun. Finally, the Holy of Holies of Amun served as the sanctuary for the chief deity Amun-Re.
