Rekhmire was a well-known character during the 18 Dynasty, New Kingdom of ancient Egypt. In that time, there were two Viziers to help the Pharoah one for the north and one for the south. The vizier of the south was Rekhmire during the reign of Thutmose III and part of the reign of Amenhotep.

TT 100 is very unique tomb as it takes the design of the converted letter T and the ceiling of the long corridor is 8 meters high in some places. Besides, the unique wall takes about the Duties of the Vizier in that time.

Where is the tomb of Rekhmire?

Like all the Nobles of the New Kingdom, they dug their tombs on the west bank in Luxor starting from Deir El Medina till the entrance to the Valley of Kings. TT 100 or the tomb of Rekhmire is located on the top of Sheikh Abd El Qurna hillside facing the Ramesseum temple of Ramesses II.

Who was Rekhmire?

He was the vizier of the south of Egypt under Thutmose III and part of the reign of Amenhotep.

  • The Vizier of the south in Hatshepsut era was User and Rekhmire was his Nephew
  • His father Neferuben was one of the strongest characters in Egypt in that time
  • His mother’s name was Bet
  • The wife’s name was Meryt
  • Daughters named Takhaout, Mutneferet and Henuttawy; Menkheperrêseneb
  • Boys named Amenhotep, Mery, and Senouseret Kenamon
  • Rekhmire had more than 100 titles in his tomb mostly honorary titles
  • Vizier Amenemopet TT29 replaced Rekhmire under the reign of Amenhotep II

How to get to the tomb of Rekhmire?

Valley of Nobles tickets window is located at the end of Memnon Colossi to the left-hand side and the ticket includes two tombs, Sennefer tomb TT96 and Rekhmire tomb TT100.

Facing Ramesseum temple is the car parking of the Valley of the Nobles. Facing the mountain and climb up to the southern hillside of Sheikh Abd El Qurna, you will pass first TT100 then bit up to left side is TT96.

When the tomb of Rekhmire was discovered?

The tomb was known since the 19th century and Robert Hay recorded the tomb in 1832. Later on, it was closed for very long time until 1906 when the Metropolitan Museum in New York sent 3 people to study the tomb.

 Where Rekhmire was buried?

Till now we do not know where Rekhmire was buried as he never was buried in TT100. In addition, there is no burial chamber was discovered and the reason behind this is not known till now.

What happened to TT100 during the Amarna Era?

During the Amarna era and the reign of king Akhenaten, they removed all the names of Gods and any names connected to god as the only god was Aten.

There were many reasons behind the damage of the tomb of Rekhmire. Besides what happened in the Amarna Era, during the modern time the tomb was used as stable for the animals and a residence place for some farmers. The worse is the damage of the very unique scene or wall which is called the Duty of the Vizier when a farmer was trying to make another entrance at that side
